Day 01

Day 1: The Zona Sul Beaches

A relaxed first day along the classic beaches from Copacabana through Ipanema to Leblon and the Arpoador sunset.

1. Morning

   Copacabana Beach

   Begin on Copacabana, the sweeping crescent with its iconic wave patterned promenade. Walk the sand among kiosks and beach games, take an early swim, and let the rhythm of carioca beach life set the tone for your week in Rio.

2. Late Morning

   Forte de Copacabana

   Visit the Forte de Copacabana at the beach's southern tip, an army fort with a small history museum. Explore the cannons and ramparts, then admire the sweeping view back along the entire bay from its popular waterfront cafe terrace.

   Ipanema Beach

   Head to Ipanema and pick a beachside spot for lunch near the lifeguard posts. The sand here buzzes with families, surfers and vendors, making an ideal base to settle in for a leisurely afternoon by the ocean.

4. Afternoon

   Feira Hippie de Ipanema

   On Sundays, browse the Feira Hippie de Ipanema on Praca General Osorio, a long standing craft market. Stalls brim with art, jewellery, leather goods and souvenirs, while food tents serve regional specialities, a lively break from the beach.

5. Late Afternoon

   Leblon

   Stroll into refined Leblon and follow its beach to the calmer western end. Climb toward the Mirante do Leblon for a lovely view back over the sand and the twin peaks of Dois Irmaos towering above the shore.

6. Evening

   Arpoador

   Finish at Arpoador for its famous sunset over the sea and Dois Irmaos. Join the crowd applauding from the rocks as the sun dips, then settle into one of Ipanema's many restaurants for a relaxed first dinner.

Day 02

Day 2: Corcovado and Tijuca Forest

Climb to Christ the Redeemer, then explore lookouts, forest trails and a waterfall in Tijuca National Park.

1. Morning

   Cristo Redentor (Corcovado)

   Take the Corcovado train up to Christ the Redeemer, the city's defining landmark. Arrive early for the clearest skies and thinnest crowds, and walk the full terrace to drink in the panorama of beaches, lagoon, bay and mountains.

2. Late Morning

   Mirante Dona Marta

   Continue to the Mirante Dona Marta, a lookout with a superb angle on the Christ statue, Sugarloaf and Guanabara Bay. It is a classic photo stop and a natural extension of the summit you have just left.

3. Lunch

   Vista Chinesa

   Drive to the Vista Chinesa pavilion in Tijuca National Park and pause to picnic nearby. The oriental gazebo frames the lagoon, Ipanema and Sugarloaf in one view, and the shaded forest offers cool relief from the coastal heat.

4. Afternoon

   Parque Nacional da Tijuca

   Explore the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, a vast replanted rainforest and one of the world's largest urban forests. Walk trails past streams and dense greenery, watching for monkeys and birds in this remarkable wilderness within the city limits.

5. Late Afternoon

   Cascatinha Taunay

   Visit the Cascatinha Taunay, a charming forest waterfall and easy roadside stop inside the park. The tumbling water framed by lush vegetation makes a refreshing final nature moment before you descend back toward the city.

6. Evening

   Santa Teresa

   End in hilltop Santa Teresa, wandering cobbled streets past galleries, studios and colonial mansions. Ride the historic yellow tram if it is running, then choose a terrace restaurant for dinner as the city lights sparkle below.

Day 03

Day 3: Port, Centro and Lapa

Explore the reborn waterfront, grand historic interiors and Cinelandia, ending with the Selaron Steps and Lapa.

1. Morning

   Museu do Amanha

   Open at the Museu do Amanha on Praca Maua, Calatrava's cantilevered Museum of Tomorrow. Its immersive exhibits on climate and the planet's future are engaging, while the harbour plaza outside frames sweeping views over the revitalised port.

2. Late Morning

   Museu de Arte do Rio

   Cross to the Museu de Arte do Rio, MAR, joining a former palace to a modern wing beneath a wave shaped roof. Explore its exhibitions on the city's art and history, and enjoy the port panorama from the rooftop.

3. Lunch

   Confeitaria Colombo

   Lunch at Confeitaria Colombo in Centro, an opulent 1894 cafe of mirrors, marble and stained glass. Savour its pastries and salgados beneath the towering belle epoque hall, a beautiful and cooling break in the historic core.

4. Afternoon

   Real Gabinete Portugues de Leitura

   Visit the Real Gabinete Portugues de Leitura, a magnificent neo Manueline library of carved wood and soaring shelves. Widely praised as one of the world's most beautiful reading rooms, it offers a quiet, awe inspiring pause in the day.

5. Late Afternoon

   Theatro Municipal

   Admire the Theatro Municipal on Cinelandia square, Rio's grand opera house inspired by the Paris Opera. Take in its ornate facade and, if a tour or performance is available, its lavish interior of marble, bronze and painted ceilings.

6. Evening

   Escadaria Selaron

   Head to the Selaron Steps rising toward Santa Teresa, clad in vivid tiles from around the world. Photograph the mosaic in the evening glow, then continue down to Lapa, where samba and choro spill from bars beneath the arches.

Day 04

Day 4: Sugarloaf, Urca and the Lagoa

Ride the cable car over the bay, relax in Urca, then wander the lagoon, gardens and forest parks.

1. Morning

   Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf)

   Ride the Sugarloaf cable car from Urca in two stages to the granite summit. In the clear morning air the views span Guanabara Bay, Botafogo, Copacabana and the distant Christ statue, a sweeping overview of the whole city.

2. Late Morning

   Praia Vermelha

   Back at the base, relax on the small, sheltered Praia Vermelha between two forested hills. Take a short walk on the Claudio Coutinho trail at its edge for peaceful ocean views and glimpses of wildlife before lunch.

3. Lunch

   Mureta da Urca

   Lunch at the Mureta da Urca, the seawall where locals gather with snacks and cold drinks facing the bay. Nearby bars serve pastries and beer, and the easygoing waterside mood invites a lingering midday break.

4. Afternoon

   Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas

   Move to the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas and follow part of its waterfront loop on foot or by bike. Kiosks, rowers and paddle boats animate the lake, which reflects Corcovado and the surrounding hills in the afternoon light.

   Jardim Botanico

   Visit the Jardim Botanico, founded in 1808, with its majestic avenue of imperial palms. Wander orchid houses, lily ponds and shaded paths, watching for toucans and marmosets in one of the city's most tranquil green retreats.

6. Evening

   Parque Lage

   Finish at Parque Lage, a forest set mansion with a photogenic fountain courtyard below Corcovado. Enjoy a coffee or early dinner in the courtyard cafe as the cliffs and the statue above catch the last of the light.

Day 05

Day 5: Day Trip to Petropolis

Head to the cool mountains and imperial Petropolis, summer capital of Brazil's 19th century emperors.

1. Morning

   Museu Imperial

   Drive into the Serra dos Orgaos to Petropolis and start at the Museu Imperial, Dom Pedro II's former summer palace. Its refined rooms, crown jewels and manicured gardens bring Brazil's imperial court to vivid life.

2. Late Morning

   Catedral de Sao Pedro de Alcantara

   Visit the neo Gothic Catedral de Sao Pedro de Alcantara, its spire rising over the town. Inside, the imperial mausoleum holds the tombs of Dom Pedro II and Empress Teresa Cristina amid stained glass and soaring arches.

3. Lunch

   Centro Historico de Petropolis

   Lunch in the historic centre, strolling tree lined avenues and canals set with elegant lampposts. The crisp mountain air and 19th century architecture offer a refreshing contrast to Rio, perfect for an unhurried highland meal.

4. Afternoon

   Casa de Santos Dumont

   Tour the Casa de Santos Dumont, the eccentric hillside home of Brazil's aviation pioneer. Packed with ingenious inventions and unusual details, the little house offers a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a celebrated inventor.

5. Late Afternoon

   Palacio de Cristal

   Stop at the Palacio de Cristal, a graceful iron and glass pavilion brought from France in the 19th century. Set in a small park, this airy structure once hosted grand events and makes a lovely final Petropolis stop.

6. Evening

   Return to Rio de Janeiro

   Descend from the mountains toward the coast as the day fades, the scenery shifting from cool highlands to warm sea. Back in Rio, enjoy a relaxed dinner in your neighbourhood after a day steeped in imperial history.

Day 06

Day 6: Day Trip to Niteroi

Cross Guanabara Bay to Niteroi for Niemeyer architecture, sweeping city views and quieter ocean beaches.

1. Morning

   MAC Niteroi

   Take the ferry across the bay to Niteroi and begin at the MAC, Oscar Niemeyer's flying saucer shaped Museum of Contemporary Art. Its curving white form and panoramic windows frame one of the most famous views back toward Rio.

2. Late Morning

   Caminho Niemeyer

   Explore the Caminho Niemeyer along the waterfront, a series of bold modernist buildings by the same architect. The sculptural concrete forms set against the bay make a striking open air showcase of Brazilian modern design.

3. Lunch

   Praia de Itacoatiara

   Drive to Praia de Itacoatiara, a wild, scenic beach ringed by green hills, and lunch at a nearby spot. Popular with surfers, its powerful waves and dramatic setting feel a world away from the calmer city beaches.

4. Afternoon

   Parque da Cidade

   Head up to the Parque da Cidade lookout high above Niteroi, a launch point for hang gliders. From the ridge the view spans the bay, Rio's skyline and the distant peaks, offering a magnificent panorama of the whole region.

5. Late Afternoon

   Ilha da Boa Viagem

   Visit the small Ilha da Boa Viagem, a rocky islet linked to shore with a colonial chapel and old fort. The quiet setting and bay views make a peaceful final stop before you head back toward the ferry.

6. Evening

   Return by ferry to Praca XV

   Ride the ferry back across Guanabara Bay to Praca XV as the sun lowers, with the Rio skyline and Sugarloaf glowing ahead. Disembark in Centro and enjoy a relaxed dinner to close a day of architecture and coast.

Day 07

Day 7: Wild West Zone Beaches

Finish with the untamed coast beyond the city: a clifftop viewpoint and the pristine beaches of the west zone.

1. Morning

   Pedra do Telegrafo

   Drive to the trailhead near Barra de Guaratiba and hike up to the Pedra do Telegrafo. The short climb rewards you with sweeping coastal views and the famous cliff edge photo spot that plays clever tricks with perspective.

2. Late Morning

   Grumari

   Descend to Grumari, a protected beach of golden sand backed by green hills and free of development. Its clean water and natural setting feel wonderfully removed from the city, a highlight of Rio's wilder western shore.

3. Lunch

   Prainha

   Continue to Prainha, a small crescent of beach famed for its consistent surf and lush backdrop. Lunch at a simple beachside spot, then watch surfers work the waves in this beloved, protected pocket of coastline.

4. Afternoon

   Barra da Tijuca

   Head to Barra da Tijuca, Rio's longest beach, stretching for kilometres of open sand and rolling surf. Its wide shore and modern promenade offer plenty of room to swim, walk and relax through the afternoon.

5. Late Afternoon

   Bosque da Barra

   Take a calmer break at the Bosque da Barra, a green urban park of lagoons and native vegetation. Stroll the trails, spot capybaras and birds, and enjoy a peaceful natural interlude away from the beach crowds.

6. Evening

   Barra da Tijuca waterfront

   Close your week with dinner along the Barra da Tijuca waterfront, where restaurants and bars line the avenue near the sea. Toast a full week in Rio with the sound of the surf as a fitting farewell to the city.
