Day 01

Day 1: The Zona Sul Beaches

A full beach day from Copacabana to Leblon, taking in the fort, Ipanema and the Arpoador sunset.

1. Morning

   Copacabana Beach

   Ease into Rio on Copacabana, the sweeping crescent famous for its wave patterned promenade. Walk the sand past kiosks and beach games, take a morning swim, and get a feel for the rhythm of carioca beach life before the day heats up.

2. Late Morning

   Forte de Copacabana

   Visit the Forte de Copacabana at the beach's southern end, an early 20th century fort still run by the army. Tour the small museum and cannons, then take in the postcard view along the whole bay from its waterfront cafe terrace.

3. Lunch

   Ipanema Beach

   Cross to Ipanema and choose a beachfront spot for lunch near the lifeguard posts. Each posto draws its own crowd, from families to surfers, and the lively sand makes a perfect base for an afternoon by the sea.

4. Afternoon

   Feira Hippie de Ipanema

   If it is Sunday, browse the Feira Hippie de Ipanema on Praca General Osorio, a long running craft fair. Stalls sell art, jewellery, leather and souvenirs, while food tents serve regional dishes, a colourful pause from the beach.

5. Late Afternoon

   Leblon

   Wander into upscale Leblon, Ipanema's calmer neighbour, and follow its beach to the quieter western end. Climb toward the Mirante do Leblon for a fine look back at the sand and the twin peaks of Dois Irmaos rising above.

6. Evening

   Arpoador

   Return east to Arpoador for the celebrated sunset over the ocean and Dois Irmaos. Join locals clapping from the rocks as the sun sets, then choose from Ipanema's abundant restaurants for a relaxed first dinner in the city.

Day 02

Day 2: Corcovado and Tijuca Forest

Summit Christ the Redeemer, then explore lookouts, waterfalls and trails deep in Tijuca National Park.

1. Morning

   Cristo Redentor (Corcovado)

   Take the cog railway up Corcovado to Christ the Redeemer for the classic first summit. Arrive early to beat crowds and cloud, and walk the full terrace for panoramic views over the lagoon, the beaches and the sprawling city below.

2. Late Morning

   Mirante Dona Marta

   Continue to the Mirante Dona Marta, a lookout offering a superb angle on the Christ statue with Sugarloaf and the bay beyond. It is a favourite viewpoint for photographers and a fine complement to the summit you just visited.

3. Lunch

   Vista Chinesa

   Drive up to the Vista Chinesa pavilion inside Tijuca National Park, pausing to picnic or snack nearby. The oriental style gazebo frames the lagoon, Ipanema and Sugarloaf, and the surrounding forest offers a cool, green break from the coast.

4. Afternoon

   Parque Nacional da Tijuca

   Delve into the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, one of the world's largest urban forests, replanted in the 19th century. Follow shaded trails past streams and lush vegetation, spotting monkeys and birds in this vast green lung above the city.

5. Late Afternoon

   Cascatinha Taunay

   Stop at the Cascatinha Taunay, a pretty forest waterfall within the park and an easy roadside visit. The falling water and rainforest setting make a refreshing final nature stop before you head back down toward the city.

6. Evening

   Santa Teresa

   End the day in hilltop Santa Teresa, wandering its cobbled lanes, galleries and colonial houses. Ride the historic yellow tram if operating, then pick a terrace restaurant for dinner as the lights of Rio flicker on below.

Day 03

Day 3: Sugarloaf, Urca and the Lagoa

Ride the cable car over the bay, relax in Urca, then explore the gardens and parks around the lagoon.

1. Morning

   Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf)

   Ride the Sugarloaf cable car from Urca in two stages to the summit. Clear morning skies reveal Guanabara Bay, Botafogo, Copacabana and the distant Christ statue, a sweeping orientation of the city from its most famous granite peak.

2. Late Morning

   Praia Vermelha

   Back at the base, unwind on the small, calm Praia Vermelha, hemmed by forested hills. Consider a short walk on the Claudio Coutinho trail at its edge for glimpses of wildlife and quiet ocean views before lunch.

3. Lunch

   Mureta da Urca

   Lunch at the Mureta da Urca, the seawall where cariocas gather with drinks and snacks facing the bay. Nearby bars serve pastries and beer, and the mellow, local atmosphere invites you to linger by the water.

4. Afternoon

   Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas

   Head to the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas and follow part of its scenic waterfront loop by foot or bike. Kiosks, rowers and paddle boats animate the lake, which mirrors Corcovado and the surrounding hills beautifully in the afternoon light.

5. Late Afternoon

   Jardim Botanico

   Visit the neighbouring Jardim Botanico, founded in 1808, with its grand avenue of imperial palms. Wander the orchid houses, lily ponds and shaded paths, keeping an eye out for toucans and marmosets in this peaceful garden refuge.

6. Evening

   Parque Lage

   Finish at Parque Lage, a mansion set in forest below Corcovado with a photogenic fountain courtyard. Enjoy a coffee or an early dinner in the courtyard cafe as the cliffs and statue glow above in the fading light.

Day 04

Day 4: Port, Centro and Lapa

Discover the revived waterfront, grand historic interiors and the Selaron Steps, ending with Lapa nightlife.

1. Morning

   Museu do Amanha

   Start at the Museu do Amanha on Praca Maua, the cantilevered Museum of Tomorrow by Santiago Calatrava. Its interactive exhibits on the planet's future are absorbing, and the surrounding harbour plaza offers wide views over the reborn port district.

2. Late Morning

   Museu de Arte do Rio

   Cross to the Museu de Arte do Rio, MAR, uniting a former palace with a modern wing under a fluid roof. Explore its exhibitions on the city's art and history, then enjoy the panoramic view from the rooftop level.

3. Lunch

   Confeitaria Colombo

   Lunch in Centro at Confeitaria Colombo, an ornate 1894 cafe of mirrors, marble and stained glass. Sample its pastries and salgados in the soaring belle epoque hall, a memorable and cooling midday stop in the historic heart.

4. Afternoon

   Real Gabinete Portugues de Leitura

   See the Real Gabinete Portugues de Leitura, a stunning neo Manueline library of carved wood, iron and glass. Its towering shelves and skylight make it one of the most beautiful reading rooms anywhere, and a wonderfully quiet interlude.

5. Late Afternoon

   Escadaria Selaron

   Walk to the Selaron Steps climbing toward Santa Teresa, covered in colourful tiles from around the world. Photograph the mosaic flights in the golden late light, then drift downhill toward Lapa as the evening begins to stir.

6. Evening

   Arcos da Lapa

   End beneath the Arcos da Lapa, the white colonial aqueduct at the centre of Rio's nightlife. Surrounding bars and clubs fill with samba and choro, so grab a caipirinha, follow the beat, and enjoy a lively night out.

Day 05

Day 5: Day Trip to Petropolis

Escape to the cool mountains and the imperial city of Petropolis, once the summer home of Brazil's emperors.

1. Morning

   Museu Imperial

   Drive up into the Serra dos Orgaos to Petropolis and begin at the Museu Imperial, the former summer palace of Emperor Dom Pedro II. Its elegant rooms, crown jewels and gardens vividly evoke Brazil's 19th century imperial court.

2. Late Morning

   Catedral de Sao Pedro de Alcantara

   Visit the neo Gothic Catedral de Sao Pedro de Alcantara, whose soaring spire dominates the town. Inside, the imperial mausoleum holds the tombs of Dom Pedro II and Empress Teresa Cristina amid stained glass and vaulted stone.

3. Lunch

   Centro Historico de Petropolis

   Lunch in the historic centre of Petropolis, strolling its tree lined avenues and canals lined with lampposts. The cool mountain air and 19th century architecture make a refreshing contrast to coastal Rio, ideal for an unhurried midday meal.

4. Afternoon

   Casa de Santos Dumont

   Tour the Casa de Santos Dumont, the quirky hillside home of Brazil's aviation pioneer. Full of clever inventions and steep interior stairs, this small house reveals the inventive mind of the man many Brazilians call the father of flight.

5. Late Afternoon

   Palacio de Cristal

   Stop at the Palacio de Cristal, a graceful iron and glass pavilion imported from France in the 19th century. Set in a small park, it once hosted balls and expositions and now makes a pretty, photogenic final Petropolis stop.

6. Evening

   Return to Rio de Janeiro

   Descend from the mountains back to Rio as the day ends, watching the landscape shift from cool highlands to warm coast. Reaching the city, enjoy a relaxed dinner in your neighbourhood after a day of imperial history and fresh air.
