One Perfect Day in Rome: Ancient Icons & the Baroque Center

Day 01

Ancient Rome & the Baroque Center

The greatest hits, from the Colosseum to the Trevi Fountain, packed into one walkable day.

  1. Morning

    Colosseum

    Start at opening with a timed ticket, ideally an arena-floor tour, to experience the amphitheater before the crowds. Give yourself an hour to take in the scale and history.

  2. Late morning

    Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

    Walk straight into the Forum on the same ticket, following the Via Sacra past temples and arches, then climb the Palatine for views over the ruins. Wear good shoes and bring water.

  3. Lunch

    Monti

    Duck into the bohemian Monti district just north of the Forum for a relaxed trattoria lunch, cacio e pepe or a supplì and pizza. It's close but feels a world away from the tourist crush.

  4. Afternoon

    The Pantheon

    Stroll into the center to the Pantheon, standing beneath the great dome and its oculus. Grab a coffee at nearby Sant'Eustachio or Tazza d'Oro, drink it standing like a Roman.

  5. Late afternoon

    Trevi Fountain & the Spanish Steps

    Toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain, then walk the elegant Tridente to the Spanish Steps, window-shopping along Via dei Condotti. Climb to the top terrace for a rooftop view.

  6. Evening

    Piazza Navona & dinner

    End at Piazza Navona to admire Bernini's fountains at dusk, then dine nearby, around Campo de' Fiori or the Pantheon, before a gelato and an evening stroll through the lit center.
