Day 01

Day 1: Sugarloaf and the Zona Sul Beaches

Rise over the bay on Sugarloaf, then work along the classic beaches from Urca to Ipanema at sunset.

1. Morning

   Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf)

   Begin at Urca for the Sugarloaf cable car, ascending in two stages to the granite peak. The morning air is usually clearest, revealing Guanabara Bay, Botafogo's curve and the far off Christ statue in one grand, orienting panorama over the city.

2. Late Morning

   Praia Vermelha

   Back at the base, relax on the small, sheltered Praia Vermelha, framed by Urca and Babilonia hills. The calm water and short Claudio Coutinho trail at its edge give a quiet, green interlude before the busier beaches ahead.

3. Lunch

   Mureta da Urca

   Lunch along the Mureta da Urca seawall, a beloved local hangout where kiosks and nearby bars serve snacks and cold beer. Sit facing the bay, watch small boats and fishermen, and soak up the laid back neighbourhood mood.

4. Afternoon

   Copacabana Beach

   Transfer to Copacabana and its famous crescent of sand and Portuguese wave paving. Swim, watch beach volleyball and footvolley, and stroll the promenade lined with kiosks, feeling the energy of Rio's most storied stretch of shore.

5. Late Afternoon

   Forte de Copacabana

   Walk to the Forte de Copacabana at the beach's southern tip, a working army fort with a small museum. From its cafe terrace the view back along the whole bay of Copacabana is one of the finest in the city.

6. Evening

   Arpoador

   Finish at Arpoador between Copacabana and Ipanema, climbing the rocks for the sunset over Dois Irmaos. Join the crowd's applause as the sun sets, then step into Ipanema for dinner among its many restaurants and bars.

Day 02

Day 2: Corcovado, Lagoa and Santa Teresa

Summit Corcovado, wander the lagoon gardens and parks, then watch the city glow from hilltop Santa Teresa.

1. Morning

   Cristo Redentor (Corcovado)

   Ride the Corcovado train up through Tijuca forest to Christ the Redeemer atop the mountain. Reach the terrace early for clearer views and gentler crowds, then take in the full circle of beaches, bay and green peaks below.

2. Late Morning

   Vista Chinesa

   Drive into Tijuca National Park to the Vista Chinesa, an oriental style pavilion perched above the forest. The lookout frames the lagoon, Ipanema and Sugarloaf in a single sweep, and the shaded jungle drive is a scenic bonus.

3. Lunch

   Jardim Botanico

   Descend to the Jardim Botanico for a garden cafe lunch amid palms and orchids. Founded in 1808, its avenues of imperial palms, lily ponds and resident wildlife make it a serene, green heart within the busy city.

4. Afternoon

   Parque Lage

   Stroll to nearby Parque Lage, where a grand mansion with a fountain courtyard sits below the cliffs of Corcovado. Wander the forest trails and enjoy a coffee in the courtyard cafe, a favourite carioca hideaway framed by the statue above.

5. Late Afternoon

   Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas

   Head to the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas and follow part of its waterside loop as the light softens. Rent a bike or paddle boat, or simply pause at a kiosk to watch rowers and the mountains mirrored on the lake.

6. Evening

   Santa Teresa

   Climb to hilltop Santa Teresa, a bohemian district of cobbled lanes, artists' studios and colonial homes. Ride the restored yellow tram if running, browse galleries, and settle into a terrace restaurant for dinner with sparkling city views.

Day 03

Day 3: Port, Centro and Lapa

Explore the reborn waterfront and grand historic interiors, then end with the arches and samba of Lapa.

1. Morning

   Museu do Amanha

   Open at the Museu do Amanha on the revitalised Praca Maua, Calatrava's cantilevered Museum of Tomorrow. Its immersive displays on climate and the future are engaging, and the harbour plaza outside frames striking views of the port and bay.

2. Late Morning

   Museu de Arte do Rio

   Cross the square to the Museu de Arte do Rio, or MAR, joining a stately old palace with a modern building under a wave shaped roof. Its collections trace the city's art and history, with a fine rooftop panorama over the port.

3. Lunch

   Confeitaria Colombo

   Move into Centro for lunch at Confeitaria Colombo, an opulent 1894 cafe of mirrors and stained glass. Its high hall and classic pastries offer a taste of belle epoque Rio and a cool retreat from the midday sun.

4. Afternoon

   Real Gabinete Portugues de Leitura

   Visit the Real Gabinete Portugues de Leitura, a breathtaking neo Manueline reading room of carved wood and towering shelves. Often called one of the world's most beautiful libraries, its book lined nave is a quiet, awe inspiring stop.

5. Late Afternoon

   Escadaria Selaron

   Walk to the Selaron Steps rising toward Santa Teresa, clad in thousands of colourful tiles from around the globe. Photograph the mosaic flights in the warm late light, then continue downhill toward the Lapa arches for the evening.

6. Evening

   Arcos da Lapa

   Finish beneath the Arcos da Lapa, the white 18th century aqueduct that anchors Rio's nightlife. Bars and clubs nearby pulse with samba and choro, so order a caipirinha and let the music carry your final evening in the city.
