3 Days in Sydney: Harbour, City and Beaches
Three days let Sydney breathe. The first day stays on the harbour, pairing the Opera House and Botanic Garden with The Rocks and the waterfront galleries. Day two turns inland to the city centre and Darling Harbour, mixing landmark views, grand shopping arcades, parks and museums with a lively waterfront finish. Day three escapes to the coast for the celebrated Bondi to Coogee walk and the eastern beaches. Everything links by train, ferry and short walks, so you cover a lot without long transfers. This is the sweet spot itinerary for a first visit, giving time to slow down at each stop while still reaching the classic harbour, city and beach faces of Sydney.
Day 01
Day 1: The Harbour
Opera House, gardens, The Rocks and the contemporary art waterfront around Circular Quay.
Morning
Sydney Opera House
Open your Sydney trip at the sails. Walk the forecourt and steps, take in the sweep of the harbour, and consider a guided tour to step inside the concert halls of this UNESCO listed performing arts landmark.
Late Morning
Royal Botanic Garden Sydney
Follow the shoreline into the harbourside gardens. Palm groves, native beds and open lawns roll down to the water, with plenty of shaded benches and framed views back toward the Opera House and city towers.
Lunch
Mrs Macquarie's Chair
Carry a picnic to this sandstone point at the garden's tip. The carved bench looks straight across to the Opera House and Harbour Bridge lined up together, the classic Sydney photo, best enjoyed slowly over lunch.
Afternoon
The Rocks
Cross to the colony's birthplace for cobbled lanes, sandstone warehouses and historic pubs. Wander the heritage alleys, dip into the small museums, and browse local stalls if the weekend markets are trading.
Late Afternoon
Museum of Contemporary Art Australia
Take in bold Australian and international works at this Circular Quay gallery. Save time for the rooftop terrace, where the free view over the Opera House and harbour rivals anything inside the galleries.
Evening
Circular Quay
Settle in at the quay for dinner as ferries glide past and the wharves light up. The promenade buzzes with buskers and diners, a fitting end to a day on Sydney's most famous stretch of water.
Day 02
Day 2: City and Darling Harbour
City views, grand arcades, Hyde Park, the art gallery and the Darling Harbour waterfront.
Morning
Sydney Tower Eye
Ride to the top of Sydney's tallest structure for a 360 degree view over the harbour, city and out to the mountains and coast. It is the best way to grasp the layout of everywhere you will visit.
Late Morning
Queen Victoria Building
Step into this ornate Romanesque arcade filling a whole city block. Under stained glass and a copper dome, browse boutiques and heritage details, a grand shelter from the weather in the heart of the shopping district.
Lunch
Pitt Street Mall
Grab lunch around Sydney's busy pedestrian shopping strip. Food halls and cafes cluster among the department stores and arcades, making it an easy midday refuel before you head for green space and galleries.
Afternoon
Hyde Park
Relax in the city's oldest public park, walking the fig lined avenue to the Archibald Fountain and the war memorial. The shaded paths connect neatly to the cathedral and gallery on the park's eastern edge.
Late Afternoon
Art Gallery of New South Wales
Explore free of charge among Australian, Aboriginal and European collections, plus the striking new building addition. It is a calm, culture rich stop on the parkland ridge above the harbour before the evening waterfront.
Evening
Darling Harbour
Head west to this lively waterfront ringed with restaurants, bars and family attractions. Stroll the promenade past the boats, pick a place for dinner, and watch the reflections of the city lights across the cove.
Day 03
Day 3: Eastern Beaches
The clifftop Bondi to Coogee walk, the beaches along the way and a Surry Hills dinner.
Morning
Bondi Beach
Start on Sydney's iconic sand. Walk the wide crescent, watch the surfers, and soak up the seaside energy before setting out on the coastal path that traces the cliffs south from the beach.
Late Morning
Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk
Follow the famous clifftop trail past sculpted sandstone, ocean pools and pocket coves. Each headland opens a new sea view, and in winter you may spot migrating whales spouting offshore as you walk.
Lunch
Bronte Beach
Stop for lunch at a cafe overlooking this compact, local favourite beach. The grassy park and historic ocean baths invite a longer break before you continue south along the coast toward Coogee.
Afternoon
Clovelly Beach
Detour into this narrow, sheltered inlet loved by snorkellers and lap swimmers. Calm water between the rock platforms makes it feel like a natural pool, a quieter contrast to the surf beaches nearby.
Late Afternoon
Coogee Beach
Reach the walk's southern end at broad, friendly Coogee. Cool off in the surf or the headland pools, then relax on the grassy slope watching the bay as the afternoon winds down.
Evening
Surry Hills
Return toward the city for dinner in Sydney's food forward inner suburb. Surry Hills packs small bars and acclaimed kitchens into walkable terrace streets, ideal for celebrating three full days of sightseeing.
