One Perfect Day in Tokyo: Temple, Shrine & Neon

With a single day, move east to west across the city's greatest hits and let the trains do the work. Begin at Senso-ji in Asakusa before the crowds, then ride toward Harajuku for the forested calm of Meiji Shrine and the color of Takeshita Street. The afternoon belongs to Shibuya, where the famous scramble and the rooftop views of Shibuya Sky capture Tokyo at its most electric. Cap the night one stop away in Shinjuku, eating grilled skewers in a lantern-lit alley. It is a full, fast day, but every stop is a genuine Tokyo essential.

Day 01

Tokyo's Greatest Hits in a Day

An east-to-west sweep hitting the old temple, the forest shrine, the scramble, and the neon night.

  1. Morning

    Senso-ji

    Start early at Senso-ji in Asakusa, Tokyo's oldest temple, when worshippers arrive before the crowds. Pass beneath the giant red lantern of the Kaminarimon gate and walk the Nakamise stalls to the incense cauldron before the main hall.

  2. Late Morning

    Meiji Shrine

    Ride the Ginza line west and transfer toward Harajuku for Meiji Shrine, a serene Shinto sanctuary set in a dense forest of donated trees. The towering wooden torii and gravel paths are a hushed contrast to the morning's temple crowds.

  3. Lunch

    Takeshita Street

    Emerge into Harajuku for lunch along Takeshita Street, a narrow, high-energy lane of youth fashion, candy-colored storefronts, and towering crepes worth the queue. It is Tokyo street style and people-watching at full volume.

  4. Afternoon

    Shibuya Crossing

    Walk down to Shibuya Crossing, the world's busiest scramble, and cross with the surge beneath the giant screens. Explore the shops and arcades of Center Gai fanning out just beyond the intersection.

  5. Late Afternoon

    Shibuya Sky

    Ride up to Shibuya Sky, the open-air rooftop deck above the crossing, for a late-afternoon panorama as the city slides toward golden hour. Reserve your timed ticket ahead, since the sunset slots go first.

  6. Evening

    Omoide Yokocho

    Finish one stop north in Shinjuku at Omoide Yokocho, a smoky, lantern-lit alley of tiny yakitori counters beside the station. Order grilled skewers and a beer elbow-to-elbow with locals to end the day the Tokyo way.
